A career in medicine is one of the most sought in today’s modern life. Being a doctor might seem next to god with all the respect and dignity surrounding it. But does the profession still carry the same aura around it? Are all doctors successful? Do they all lead a luxurious life in a bungalow and have a Bentley or Porsche to drive? Are they still worshipped like god?
“IS BEING A DOCTOR A LUCRATIVE CAREER”
As with any profession, a career as a doctor has its inherent risks and luxuries. But the success of the career lies not just in taking it up as a profession but also in the passion of the person who is taking it up.
“A CAREER AS A DOCTOR HAS IT’S INHERENT RISKS AND LUXURIES LOWS AND HIGHS”
Becoming a doctor has to be a dream rather than an afterthought. If you have the luxury of following yours then please follow it. Not everyone have the luxury of pursuing their dream career. But if you want to take up your career just because you fantasize wearing a white coat then DON’T. There are lots of other career options lying around. To become a doctor needs a lot of dedication, hard work, sacrifice, lots and lots of time, loads and loads of patience.
“PURSUE YOUR DREAM AS A PASSION DON’T ROMANTICIZE CAREER AS A DOCTOR”
Being a successful doctor isn’t hard, but it isn’t fairy tale either. And when I say it’s not hard, I mean that it’s easier than what we all went through to become a doctor (testing, rotations, testing, long nights, and more testing). If being a doctor sounds fancy to you then be prepared to be disappointed and jaded. The fascination for medicine can be lost very soon without enough mental and emotional preparation.
“TO BE A SUCCESSFUL DOCTOR NEEDS HUMILITY RATHER THAN SMARTNESS “
The sheer enormity of knowledge together with the long hours spent preparing can be overwhelming and taxing. Seeing the body getting dissected finely to layers and a frog being pithed alive can be quite a bit of a shock for the unprepared and weak hearted. Medical school learning is not confined to the textbooks alone and mere studying 24/7 will not help you pass out with flying colors. Be prepared to come out of your regular reading methods that we have been quite accustomed to during our pre-med schooling. Interact with seniors, spend time in the library, participate in academic events and discuss with your seniors and colleagues.
“LEARN HOW YOU LEARN AND LOOK BEYOND YOUR BOOKS”
Entering medical school and taking up career as a doctor might require many years of commitment and dedication. A degree alone might not suffice and you might be required to further specialize and super-specialize. There is a high chance you would be still studying while your friends who have taken up other career options have already started earning handsomely.
“SUCCESSFUL DOCTORS ARE LIFE LONG LEARNERS”
That being said, we aren’t necessarily blessed with the ability to become successful nor are we even taught how to become successful. A lifelong commitment, dedication, passion towards work, excellent time management skills and good work ethics are all that will make your career as a doctor successful.
